Many hands make light work! Volunteering is the best way to get to know the students, parents, teachers and staff of your Fairmount community. No contribution of your time is too small, and there many opportunities throughout the year.
How can you find out about opportunities to volunteer? Join our Yahoo group to get emails about volunteering, and subscribe to the Fairmount calendar to stay up to date. See an event you want to help lead? Reach out to the PTA Board (firstname.lastname@example.org) and they will gladly accept your offer to help.
White Zone : Help students arrive at school safely! Shifts start 20 minutes before the school day begins and end 10 minutes after. Email email@example.com to join the team. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to join the team. More information from 2017 can be read here.
Food Bank : Help unload the delivery from San Francisco Food Bank every Monday at 6:30. To keep the Food Bank at Fairmount we need volunteers every week.
In the classroom : reach out to your student’s teacher to find out how you can help. They often need room parents, an occasional extra set of hand, or chaperones.
Compadres de Lectura : come to an evening of sharing your love of reading with students. Spanish speaking parents help students who need to practice Spanish, while English speaking Parents help students who want to practice English. You can also help by joining the team that coordinates dinner delivery and rewarding the students.
Student Store : help students exchange their good behavior plumas for prizes. Reach out to the Parent Liaison to find out how you can help
The PTA, the SSC and ELAC : Attend a PTA, SSC or ELAC meeting. Meet other involved parents, and learn more about Fairmount. You can even become a board member or join a committee. These roles are key to making sure Fairmount traditions continue, funds are raised and spent wisely, and that Fairmount continues to improve.
There are several big events that depend on a lot of parent involvement to be successful. Planning starts weeks (and sometimes months!) in advance, but you can also show up the day of the event to help pitch in.
Baile Familiar : our Fall party to celebrate the start of the new school year, Baile happens on a Friday evening. Sign up to help plan the event, or volunteer at the event.
Dia de los Muertos : we create a community altar and host activities to remember and celebrate loved ones who have passed away. We need volunteers to help create the communal altar and organize related activities.
Black History Month : we actively recognize the contributions and presence of our African American community members, past and present. Volunteers needed to lead activities, presentations, performances for the community during morning Circle/assembly.
Una Noche : our big adults-only party and silent auction in the Spring. Come to party with other parents, and donate by bidding on fantastic items. Sign up to help plan the event, or to be a night-of volunteer.
Dia de los Niños : a big party in the Spring thrown by the school’s teachers and staff to celebrate our students. Usually happens on a Friday, always during school.
Teacher Appreciation Week : In the Spring, sign up to cook dinner for a teacher or staff member, organize matching parent cooks to teachers and staff, deliver breakfast treats, or organize a class gift for your teacher.
Fiestaval : a big Saturday afternoon party in the Spring featuring games, performances, an art auction, and food. Sign up to help plan the event or volunteer day of.
Many of the programs and events that make Fairmount special depend upon fundraising efforts.
Be a Hero : our biggest fundraising campaign of the year. Join the team that gets people excited about donating, rallying at morning circle or sending out emails. If you have access to corporate matching donations, pool together with parents who don’t to increase your impact.
Una Noche : our biggest fundraising event. Help organize the party, solicit items for the auction or volunteer the night of. Or go above and beyond and join the committee that makes Una Noche a huge success every year.
Winter Raffle : join the team that makes sure every student receives a packet of raffle tickets to sell, and that every student who sells tickets receives their hard-earned Mitchell’s Ice Cream gift certificate.
Glen Park Festival : Coordinate the Fairmount booth at the Glen Park Festival to make sure we receive a festival grant, bake yummy treats for the bake sale, or help out in the booth.
Scrip : selling scrip is a easy way to help out, especially if you are a parent who is able to be at school a lot. Contact email@example.com if you want to help out or buy scrip. Find out more on the Fundraising page.
Merchandise : selling merchandise at events and meetings helps raise funds and spreads school spirit. Or buy it online!
Lead a school tour in the Fall and share your love of Fairmount with prospective parents. Tours are bilingual, so grab a buddy who speaks the language you don’t, or show off your bilingual skills.
Make choir happen by signing up with the choir teacher in the Fall, and coordinating parent chaperones in the Spring.
Join our Education Outside instructor on a gardening day to help keep Fairmount beautiful.
Help with maintaining the wearefairmount.com and somosfairmount.com website.
Create beautiful graphics for our campaign and event posters, flyers and announcements.
Organize your class’ art piece for the Fiestaval art auction.
Join the translation team! We want to make sure all announcements are in both Spanish and English (and Google Translate isn’t perfect yet).
